Sailboat in San Francisco Bay on a calm sea under in heavy fog conditions as part of the Avelamer brand world

It Started with a Hat

One windy day on San Francisco Bay, my favorite blue cap blew into the water. When I went looking to replace it, the options were all familiar in the wrong way: loud and over-branded, or too traditional to feel like everyday wear. That gap became the starting point for Avelamer, a quieter take on apparel for life on and off the water.

Rooted in Northern California

Avelamer (ah-veh-lah-mair) comes from the Breton word Avel, wind, and the French la mer, the sea. It began in Sausalito, shaped by the Northern California coastal mornings. Fog, salt air, wind off the Bay, sun breaking through by afternoon, days that start cool and warm as they go. That weather informs the brand as much as sailing does. The palette comes from the same place. Muted and weathered, the tones of Bay water and fog rather than bright resort color. Not a costume, just the place itself.

Built for the Rhythm of Coastal Days

Avelamer is made for the way a coastal day actually moves. Cool at the marina in the morning, bright by afternoon, wind coming up over the water, and layers you add and shed as it turns. The fits are easy and leave room to move, on the boat and off it. The fabric is cotton-forward, soft and breathable, and built to wear and keep wearing.

Made for the Long Run

We would rather move slowly than chase what is new. No seasonal churn, no trend cycles, no reinventing the brand every few months. The aim is a line that reads the same each time you come back to it, and pieces you still reach for a year from now, not just this season.

For the Harbor

Avelamer is shaped by Sausalito and San Francisco Bay, and that means the working harbor as much as the open water. The boatyard, the marine trades, the hands that keep boats on the Bay. Supporting the craft and the place we come from is part of how we operate. Quietly, with long horizons, and without fanfare.
